Jim Finley: A Biography
Jim Finley founded the Intrepid Sailing Corps in 2020.
Mr. Finley grew up in Northeast Ohio, born in Cleveland, he attended Solon High School and Cleveland State University all the while knowing since the age of five that he wanted to be a Firefighter.
Prior to the launch of Intrepid Sailing Corps, Mr. Finley has served, and continues to serve, the Chagrin Falls Fire Department since 1995. He is currently the Fire Marshal for the Chagrin Falls Fire Department which serves in addition to Chagrin Falls, the Villages of Bentleyville, Hunting Valley, Moreland Hills and the Cleveland Metroparks in those communities.
He is a member of the International Fire Marshals Association, The Ohio Fire Officials Association (Executive Board), and the North Eastern Ohio Fire Prevention Association (Executive Board). He is a certified Firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, and Fire Safety Inspector. He has been twice awarded Firefighter of the Year, the EMS Lifesaving Award, the Phillips, Raymond, and Hissett Service Awards, and the Distinguished Community Service Award.
Mr. Finley was on duty during the terrorist events of 9/11 which led him to take a leave of absence from the Fire Department and enlist in the Navy to be trained as a Medical Corpsman. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Corps Regiment serving in both a Scout Sniper and Mobile Assault Platoon. He is a Combat Veteran with one deployment to Iraq in 2005 and his military service was cut short by a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. His awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (Mobilized).
He, his wife Beth, and their dachshunds, live in Chagrin Falls.
